We make Incognito Browser. This is our own account of what the app does and doesn’t do, not an independent review.

With rising concerns over online privacy, protecting personal data while browsing matters more than ever. Android users have many private browsers to choose from. In this post we look at Incognito Browser, our free Android browser. We explain plainly how it handles your data, what it can’t protect you from, and where other browsers do more.

The Importance of Data Protection in Today’s Digital Landscape

Clicks, searches and page visits can all be tracked, and data breaches, malware and targeted ads are part of everyday browsing. Many people turn to the incognito modes built into mainstream browsers. These clear your history and cookies on your device when you close them. That’s useful, but they don’t hide what you do from the websites you visit, your internet provider or the network you’re on.

No single browser fixes all of that. Real protection usually comes in layers: a browser that doesn’t keep your history, an ad blocker, tracker blocking, and a VPN if you need to hide your IP address. Here is which of those layers Incognito Browser covers, and which it doesn’t.

Core Features That Protect Your Data

Here’s a closer look at what Incognito Browser does:

  • Private mode all the time: The app runs in private mode all the time and wipes history, cookies and sessions when you exit the app. It keeps no browsing history or cache on your device. Downloaded files are kept. Every tab is private. Read more about how private mode works.
  • Agent Cloaking: Agent Cloaking masks the browser and device that websites see, and it can load desktop versions of sites. It changes how your browser describes itself to sites. It is not fingerprint protection, and sites can still read other signals from your browser. Learn more about how Agent Cloaking works.

  • Ad Blocker: The app has a built-in ad blocker. Fewer ads can make pages cleaner, and blocking ads can also lower your exposure to malvertising, the practice of hiding malware inside online ads.
  • Settings: You can turn images, JavaScript and cookies on or off.
  • Web3 Support: Incognito Browser opens IPFS, .eth and .crypto addresses, so you can visit decentralized sites without a separate app. See how Web3 browsing works.

How Does Incognito Browser Compare to Other Private Browsers?

Chrome’s Incognito mode is a mode you open inside Chrome, not a separate browser. According to Google’s help page, after your Incognito session ends, Chrome doesn’t keep site data or a record of the sites you visited, and third-party cookies are blocked by default in Incognito. Google also says the websites you visit, including Google sites, and the organizations that manage your network, such as your school, employer or internet provider, may still be able to see your activity.

Incognito Browser is a separate Android app and is not part of Chrome. It stays in private mode all the time, has a built-in ad blocker, and wipes history, cookies and sessions when you exit the app. It shares the basic limit of Chrome’s Incognito mode: it does not hide your activity from the sites you visit or from your network. Read more about the limits of Chrome’s Incognito mode.

Other private browsers do more in several areas, and you should know where:

  • Tracker blocking by default: Brave Shields block third-party ads and trackers by default, and Firefox Focus blocks a wide range of common trackers by default. Incognito Browser has a built-in ad blocker.
  • Fingerprint protection: Brave randomizes your browser fingerprint by default to make fingerprint tracking harder. Incognito Browser does not offer fingerprint protection.
  • Open source: Brave and Firefox Focus publish their source code. Incognito Browser is not open source.
  • iPhone and desktop: Brave runs on Android, iPhone and desktop, and Firefox Focus is on Android and iPhone. Incognito Browser is Android only.
  • Hiding your IP address: Incognito Browser is not a VPN. It does not hide your IP address from websites or your internet provider. If you need that, use a trusted VPN or Tor Browser.

On data collection, Google Play’s Data safety section for Incognito Browser says the app may collect crash logs, diagnostics and other app performance data, for analytics.

Security During Online Shopping and Banking

Shopping and banking involve sensitive data such as card details, personal information and passwords, all frequent targets for criminals. A private browser helps here in one specific way. Incognito Browser wipes history, cookies and sessions when you exit the app, so your sign-ins to shops and banks are cleared from the browser once you exit. After that, the next person who picks up your phone won’t find your open sessions or browsing history in the browser. That matters most on a shared or borrowed device.

Fashion Stores

A browser can’t make a shop or bank safe on its own. Your card details are protected in transit by the site’s HTTPS connection, not by private mode. Check that you’re on the real site address, use strong unique passwords and two-step sign-in, and don’t enter payment details on public Wi-Fi you don’t trust.

Ad Blocking

Incognito Browser has a built-in ad blocker, so pages show fewer ads and less clutter.

Privacy for the Next Generation: Web3 and Decentralization

Web3 sites live on decentralized networks rather than on one company’s servers. Incognito Browser opens IPFS, .eth and .crypto addresses, so you can visit these sites directly.

Decentralized doesn’t automatically mean private. Files on IPFS are generally public to anyone who has the address, and transactions on public blockchains can be seen by anyone. Treat Web3 sites with the same care as any other website.

Everyday Features

Incognito Browser covers the everyday basics. It has tabbed browsing with every tab private, a dark mode, a choice of search engine and 13 languages. It also has fast, multi-threaded downloads and a video downloader (not every video can be downloaded every time). Settings let you turn images, JavaScript and cookies on or off.

Final Thoughts: Is Incognito Browser the Right Option for You?

Incognito Browser is a good fit if you want an Android browser that stays in private mode, wipes history, cookies and sessions when you exit the app, has a built-in ad blocker, and opens Web3 addresses.

It is not the right tool if you need tracker blocking by default, fingerprint protection, open-source code, an iPhone or desktop version, or a hidden IP address. For those, look at the browsers above, or add a VPN.

Want to try it? Incognito Browser is free on Android. Get it on Google Play.
